This small pond is part of the Elster-Saale-Kanal. This channel was build 1933 - 1942 as a shipping lane between Leipzig and the Elbe River, but never finished.

The Netherlands are a river delta area.
So we have a lot of water.
Some of the lands are lower than the sea level, we pumped the water out of the sea behind selfmade dikes. We did this in the past with windmills.
